In Ilhada, her new album, Mônica Freire offers a musical journey where her native Brazil meets the Middle East. Reflecting an artist who draws on diverse influences, the songs alternate between danceable and powerful, moving between Portuguese and French. These delicate, poetic pieces explore identity and exile, as well as strength and joy. Ilhada won the Félix award for World Music Album of the Year at ADISQ 2024.
